Tang Bo was an elder of the Tang Family from over 100 years ago. He was a close friend of Cheongmyeong and died during the war against the Demonic Cult a month before the final battle.
Appearance[]
Tang Bo appeared as looking young despite his age. This is due to reaching a certain level of martial arts that helped him retain how he looks on his youth (similar to Cheongmyeong, who retained his looks when he was 30)[2]. He has fair skin, slim eyes with brown irises, and slightly thick eyebrows. He has long, disheveled, brown hair, with bangs that's parted at the center. Tang Bo wears half his hair up into a bun, pinned in place with a pink hairpin and leaves the rest of his hair down and loose.
In the webtoon, Tang Zhan is almost the splitting image of Tang Bo. Tang Bo has his hair in a messy bun with a red hairpin. It is also seen that he has a few grey strands of hair, but the majority of his hair is brown. He has a dimple on the left side of his face and his eyebrows, following the design of the other Tang family members, curl up at the end. His eyes are also green, but his fingers are clean unlike the much-loved fan design.
Tang Bo wore a black martial arts uniform with the Tang green robes on top. The robes are lined with purple with golden embellishments in the neck area, and billowing green sleeves with floral, white embroidery on it, along with black shoes.
In fan artworks, he is often depicted with blackened nails and fingers, as a result of his exposure to the poisons of the Tang Family. Oftentimes he is also depicted with green eyes, reminiscent to the artistic choice of the manhwa.
Personality[]
Cheongmyeong often described Tang Bo as a "crazy guy". He is also described as cold and had an overall negative vibe in the Tang Family, and often hid deep inside the Tang Estate[3]. Yet despite that, in the memories of Cheongmyeong, it is often seen with Tang Bo being cheerful or smiling, and oftentimes teasing Cheongmyeong, notably warmer to him.[?]
Hope. Isn't that right, Taoist-hyung?
Tang Bo to Cheongmyeong [4]
According to Cheongmyeong, Tang Bo drifted freely in the wind. Though his conduct would normally result in expulsion, this fault was ignored thanks to his immense talents which earned him the title Prime Elder.[5]
Background[]
Tang Bo is an elder of the Tang Family and was described as a high-level expert among the Tang Family's grandmasters in 100 years[6]. He held the title of Dark Saint (Hangul: 암존) and made a name for himself during the war against the Demonic Cult as he fought side-by-side with Cheongmyeong during his days as the Plum Blossom Sword Saint. They had earned the title 'Ssangjon' which roughly translates to 'twin sovereigns'. Tang Bo is admired as a hero until today, said to be someone who did major contributions during the war against Cheonma's forces. Tang Bo died during that war against the Demonic Cult just a month after asking Cheongmyeong to take care of his family.[7]
Even though he was an expert in the martial arts of the Tang Family, he oftentimes distanced himself away from them as he disliked their ways of being overly reliant on their poisons instead of martial arts. Cheongmyeong described him as no less than an outsider who left the Tang Family[8].
Abilities[]
Tang Bo is an unrivaled grandmaster even among the Tang Family.[?] Cheongmyeong notes that the Seven Star Soul Exile was a specialty of his.[9]
He has his own mentioned abilities in the novel (currently):
Medical Knowledge[]
Tang Bo is well-versed in the art of medicine and was often the one who nursed Cheongmyeong's wounds during the war.
Poison Immunity[]
The Tang Family is well-versed in the art of poison, with Tang Bo having personal training in the family to achieve immunity. He also utilizes it during combat although he has shown great disdain in its reliance.
Poison Detoxification[]
The Tang Family has the ability to utilize their qi to detoxify themselves of alcohol and poison. Tang Bo is no exception.
Martial Prowess[]
He is trained in the art of the dagger and has shown great reliance on it rather than the poison that the Tang Family is renowned for. His skills are acknowledged by Cheongmyeong himself multiple times. Tang Bo also has great martial prowess to the extent of creating brand-new techniques in the midst of war that were soon passed down to generations.

Etymology[]
Since the Tang Family is a common trope in wuxia stories, we know that that his surname should be romanised as Tang, leading to the use of Tang Bo on the wiki. However the author of Return of the Mount Hua Sect, Biga, used a different hanja (當) for the Tang clan. The proper romanisation of his name into Korean would be Dang Bo ( 當步/당보).
The official English translation of the webtoon uses Bo Tang.[10]
Nomenclature[]
Official | Hanja | Hangul | Variations |
---|---|---|---|
Bo Tang[10] | 당보 | ||
Master of Shadow[11] | 暗尊 | 암존 | Dark Sovereign, Dark Saint |
Trivia[]
- Ivy can be seen on his novel card. This plant is known as a medicine but also a poison, both being specialities of the Tang Family. It can also symbolize friendship.
- He is apparently just as crazy as Cheongmyeong. Whenever Cheongmyeong beat him up, he would come back every time.[3]
