Baek Cheon is a second-grade disciple of the Mount Hua Sect,[4] and the leader of the Baek-generation.[5] He was known as the genius that would revitalize the sect.[6] Born Jin Dongryong, he is Jin Cho-Baek's third and youngest son.[7]
Appearance
Baek Cheon has straight long hair with parted bangs, usually wearing a white forehead ribbon. In the novel, he regularly changes up his hairstyle, second only to Tang Soso. He is described as handsome by Cheongmyeong. In truth, he doesn't really care about his appearance. Though he's obsessed with neat things and pays attention to organize his hair neatly, he doesn't think his appearance should be shabby as a disciple of the Mount Hua Sect. He has big, strong eyes with a bluish-green tint to them. He has white skin and a sharp jawline that makes him look like a beauty, but the thick eyebrows make him look masculine. Upon first impression, he gives of the feel that he's healthy.[?]
In his youth, he wore the Mount Hua Sect 2nd ranked disciple uniform: black gown with sect's pink flower symbol on the upper right. However in his later years, Baek Cheon switched to a white attire.[?]
Cheongmyeong described him as handsome enough to make him look twice, while comparing his good-looks to those legendary heroes in old folktales.[8]
Personality
Baek Cheon had somewhat of a hero's complex, who believed that he must shoulder all the sect's hopes and be the one to bring back glory to Mount Hua. In extension of this, he romanticized the sect's disrepair as charming, though he later realized how pathetic this sentiment was, once he saw the renovated sect grounds.[9]
Baek Cheon is known to be quite stern among the 3rd-grade disciples,[10] through his concern for propriety, including the courtesies that should be observed between people. He is also quite eloquent, who can call attention to somebody's problematic behavior while saving face for himself. Though he struggles to keep his composure while faced with Cheongmyeong's relentless impertinence.[11] Hyun Jong describes him as a sensible young man with a good head on his shoulders, in spite of it all.[12]
"You're like a frog trapped in a well (...) You're content to languish in a narrow well that other frogs wouldn't even deign to jump into, croaking away and puffing up your neck in self-satisfaction." - Cheongmyeong to Baek Cheon[13]
Baek Cheon was a big fish trapped in a small pond, indicating that he had a critical flaw that prevented him from joining his peers in the ocean.[10] Although he liked to believe that he worked hard to restore the sect, he was actually just content with ruling as king over the tiny kingdom he built within the sect. This is shown by how he brought his peers to enjoy a drink before returning to the sect, and how he prioritised bullying his juniors instead of practicing for the Huazhong Contest. This prompts Cheongmyeong to compare him to a frog in a well.[13]
Background
Baek Cheon was the strongest disciple of the Baek line at Mount Hua, and aspired to one day lead the sect as its leader.[13] Before Cheonmyeong's appearance, Baek Cheon was known as Mount Hua's top prodigy, and many believed that he would be instrumental in restoring the sect to its former glory.[10] For the past two years, his sole aim has been to prove himself at the Huazhong Contest. For this reason, he and the other 2nd-grade disciples went into isolation training.[14]
Turns out that he left his family and joined the Mount Hua sect, in hopes of becoming stronger and surpassing his older brother Jin Geumryong one day. At first it was out of spite, but as he saw how his contributions mattered, he came to appreciate his life at Mount Hua. Growing up, he was always bullied by his brother, and lived a well-off life with good food and nice clothes, something he would recall as peacocking in front of others. Baek Cheon was defeated by his brother in the last contest two years ago.[1]
After the timeskip, he is known as Baekcheon of the righteous blossom; "the legendary young master who led his fellow disciples into the realm, obliterated a band of fearsome bandits, and saved countless lives in the process."[4]
Abilities
As the sect's top prodigy, he had no one to challenge him nor scold him. Although Baek Cheon is the strongest disciple in the Baek line, he is so weak that he doesn't stand a chance against Zhongnan. Let alone places like Shaolin, Wudang or the Nangong clan, where every other child is a generational prodigy.[13]
He is capable of using Sword Aura.[15] Trying to improve himself, Baek Cheon tried imitating Zhongnan's Illusion Blades, which itself was a modified version of Huashan's original Illusion Blades. This made his style a clumsily modified version of the original, similar to the Zhongnan's fundamental style, leading to crude sword strokes.[13]
After the time skip, he was able to defeat Jin Hyeon using the Seven Blossom Blades.[16]
